Prof. Walter Kolch has been Systems Biology Ireland’s (SBI) Director since its inception in 2009. Prior to his appointment as SBI Director, Walter Kolch was a Senior Group Leader at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, andProfessor for Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. During that period, he founded and directed the Sir Henry Wellcome Functional Genomics Facility. He is also Director of the UCD Conway Institute, an interdisciplinary flagship Research Institute for biomolecular and biomedical research. Originally trained as a medical doctor, he spent most of his career working in research with a focus on the analysis of kinase signaling pathways and applied systems biology approaches to the understanding of those pathways, particularly in the field of Raf and MAP kinase cascades. He has authored or co-authored more than 190 papers and is particularly noted for his work on cellular signaling pathways. Since Walter Kolch has worked in pharmaceutical industry, research institutes and universities, he has a wide experience in basic research, translational and commercial aspects the life science research sector.
